University of Iowa Health Care will pay $4.16 million to settle a lawsuit from the family of a Johnson County man who went into cardiac arrest and suffered a brain injury after being restrained during a psychiatric crisis in the emergency department.

The lawsuit was filed in April 2024 by Victoria Villarreal, guardian and mother of Conrad Colombo, who self-admitted to the UI Health Care emergency department on April 10, 2022, while reporting a history of bipolar and schizoaffective disorder. Colombo, 38, told staff he had been released from jail earlier that morning following a fight with his brother and had gone several days without sleep or his prescribed medications, according to the lawsuit.
