A Paradise Township homeowner awoke to a man standing over him in only underwear after a break-in at his Black Horse Road home, Pennsylvania State Police announced on Monday, Dec. 1.

Donald Wayne Roop, 47, of Paradise, was arrested after the early-morning burglary on Sunday, Nov. 23, according to PSP and court documents obtained by Daily Voice.

Troopers were called to 183 Black Horse Road at approximately 7:10 a.m. when the homeowner reported that the intruder entered through a garage door and then came into his bedroom, according to the release. The victim told police he opened his eyes to find a “middle-aged male” dressed only in underwear standing beside him as he slept.

The man yelled at Roop to get out, checked on his baby daughter in an adjoining room, then retrieved a handgun and ordered Roop out at gunpoint, PSP wrote in the affidavit. The victim said he had no idea who Roop was and that he was not welcome inside the home.

As troopers continued their investigation, another neighbor approached and said he saw a man hiding behind a tree line who matched the description. The victim later confirmed that man was the intruder, according to police.

When troopers located Roop, they said they smelled alcohol on him. Roop allegedly told police he had used methamphetamine earlier, punched a PSP Livescan machine after being told not to, and stated he “would not go to court.” He also threatened to kill a trooper by putting a bullet in his head, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

Court documents show Roop is charged with the following offenses in Lancaster County:

  • Felony Burglary — Overnight Accommodations; Person Present.
  • Misdemeanor Terroristic Threats.
  • Misdemeanor Disorderly Conduct.
  • Summary Public Drunkenness.
  • Misdemeanor Institutional Vandalism of an Educational Facility.

His preliminary arraignment was held before Magisterial District Judge Raymond S. Sheller at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23, resulting in his confinement at Lancaster County Prison on $100,000 cash bail.

Roop’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 9 a.m. before the same judge.
