The Chattanooga Fire Department (CFD) gathered on Tuesday to honor the retirement of Captain Wadie E. Suttles III, a highly respected and deeply admired member of Engine 4’s Red Shift. After 26 years of service, Captain Suttles is officially “hanging up his turnout gear,” leaving behind a legacy defined by leadership, professionalism, and unwavering calm under pressure, the department says.
Colleagues describe him as the kind of firefighter who never lost his cool, never complained, and never spoke an unkind word, even in the most challenging moments. His knowledge, experience, and steady presence have long been considered major assets to both the department and the community he served, firefighters say. Close
