If you’re wondering how Rio Hondo Prep gets it done up front offensively and defensively against much bigger opponents, you have to take a close look at two-way lineman Elijah Gavia, who is 6-foot-1 and 270 pounds.
Gavia is the heaviest player on the team by 30 pounds, and one of the most athletic.
“He’s a physical force,” Kares coach Mark Carson said of Gavia. “He’s one of the best athletes on our team. You wouldn’t think so looking at him, but he’s got cat-like quickness and so strong as well. He’s been an incredible player for us, that’s for sure.”
During Rio Hondo Prep’s 29-7 victory over Redondo Union on Saturday for the CIF Southern Section Division 5 title, Gavia delivered a truck-like block that went viral on social media.
