SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Springfield is ready to kick off the holiday season in style during its tree lighting event.

Visit Springfield said the event is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at the Old State Capitol Plaza in Downtown Springfield.

The event was previously scheduled for Nov. 29, until several inches of snow were dumped on the area.

Attendees can join Abe and Mary Lincoln, along with other characters, for free hot cocoa, cookies and caroling at 4:30 p.m.

The tree lighting countdown and lighting will take place at 5 p.m., highlighted by the jolly old elf, Santa Claus.
