A Long Island family is reeling after a fast-moving fire destroyed their home and claimed the lives of their beloved dogs.
Flames tore through the North Bellmore residence on Sacco Place around 6:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, as Daily Voice previously reported.
Jeanne Marie and Ryan Matland, and their five children, were inside at the time and escaped safely, according to a GoFundMe organized on their behalf. But the family’s beloved dogs, Peaches and Bruiser, weren’t so fortunate. Both animals perished in the blaze.
“An amazing family from North Bellmore experienced an unexpected tragedy yesterday,” organizer Suzanne Aruti wrote. “The effects of this loss will be felt for a long time.”
Multiple departments worked to knock down the blaze as investigators from the Nassau County Fire Marshal and the Arson Bomb Squad responded to determine the cause.
Two firefighters were injured and were taken to a hospital for treatment, Nassau County Police said. No other injuries were reported.
Aruti urged neighbors and supporters to help the Matlands rebuild, noting that the family “lost everything in their home.”
“No donation is too small,” she wrote. “Let’s come together to help this wonderful family, who always does so much to help others.”
The campaign had already collected nearly $25,000 by Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 2. Those interested in supporting the family can donate via GoFundMe.
