ALCOA, Tenn. — The Alcoa Police Department is urging the community to remain vigilant as reports of scam attempts rise. According to APD, these scams frequently involve suspects contacting individuals by phone, text message, email and social media, impersonating law enforcement officers, government officials and financial institutions.
A common tactic of these scammers involves pressuring victims to send payment through Bitcoin and gift cards. These scammers also often create a sense of urgency or fear to convince individuals that immediate payment is required.
According to APD, no legitimate law enforcement agency will ever ask for payment over the phone, request digital currency, demand money to clear a warrant, settle missed court fees, fix missed jury duty, or “bond out” a relative,
