JOHNSTOWN — Sir William Johnson died 250 years ago. His wife Molly Brant was preparing to leave and Johnson Hall became the property of Johnson’s son, John.

The holidays would have been celebrated behind fortifications and armed guards as a colony transformed into a state and those states into a nation — a transformation that would be denied to the Johnson family because they were loyal to the British crown. The hall was confiscated in May 1776 and the family imprisoned or forced to flee.
