An internal audit found that Providence has been making thousands of dollars of overtime payments to ineligible city employees for years, stirring up discussions about greater fiscal responsibility.
Providence’s Internal Auditor, Gina Costa, conducted an investigation, reported her findings in March and concluded that the city paid out more than $145,000 in improper overtime compensation between 2022 and February of this year. A City Councilor had requested that Costa’s office review payments made to one employee, and further research uncovered the rest.
