George Clooney plays an A-list movie star in the twilight of his career in Netflix's "Jay Kelly."

Want to get some movie watching done ahead of awards season? The American Film Institute has your to-do list.

The AFI released its AFI Awards 2025 honorees on Thursday, Dec. 4, declaring its top 10 movies and TV programs for the year.

Among the films honored: "Jay Kelly," which stars George Clooney; Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein;" "Hamnet," which won the Toronto Film Festival's People's Choice Award, and the Paul Thomas Anderson-directed "One Battle After Another," which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and was recently named Best Feature at the 2025 Gotham Film Awards.

The AFI also honored ten TV series including 2025 Emmy winners such as "Adolescence," "The Studio" and "The Pitt."

“For more than a quarter of a century, AFI Awards has held the flag high for community without competition,” said Bob Gazzale, AFI President & CEO, in a statement. “It is AFI’s honor to celebrate these creative ensembles as one, as together they have proved the power of art in challenging times.”

The AFI will hold its annual gathering for the film and TV honorees on Friday, January 9, 2026, at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles – a ceremony that serves as an awards season showcase for Oscar hopefuls.

The American Film Institute's Motion Pictures of the Year

  • "Avatar: Fire and Ash" – film No. 3 in the blockbuster series from director James Cameron hits theaters Dec. 19.
  • "Bugonia" – available to rent on digital platforms as well as Fandango at Home, Google Play and YouTube; hits DVD and Blu-ray Disc on Dec. 23.
  • "Frankenstein" – streaming on Netflix.
  • "Hamnet" – the fictional history tale about Shakespeare is in theaters now.
  • "Jay Kelly" – in select theaters now, streaming on Netflix on Friday, Dec. 5.
  • "Marty Supreme" – in theaters Dec. 25, the film stars Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow.
  • "One Battle After Another" – still in theaters, available to rent on digital platforms as well as Fandango at Home, Google Play and YouTube.
  • "Sinners" – on HBO Max and available to rent or buy on digital platforms.
  • "Train Dreams" – the film starring Joel Edgerton as a logger is streaming now on Netflix and remains in some theaters.
  • "Wicked: For Good" – Part Two of the adaptation of the Wizard of Oz-based musical starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo is in theaters now.
