A 26-year-old Massachusetts man accused of gunning down a father of three as he walked home from dropping his 6-year-old son off at school has been indicted on murder and other charges, authorities said.
Snehal Srivastava, of Shrewsbury, who is charged with killing 56-year-old Kevin Doherty, also of Shrewsbury, was indicted in the killing this week, the Worcester County District Attorney's Office said.
Srivastava faces four charges: one count each of intimidation of a witness, possession of a firearm not at home or work, and vandalism, in addition to the murder charge, the prosecutor said. He'll return to court in January.
Police say Doherty crossed paths with Srivastava on Aug. 28 near Jordan Pond in Shrewsbury. Doherty was walking home from Coolidge Elementary School when he allegedly spotted the 26-year-old spray painting a bridge around 8:45 a.m.
Doherty called 911 when Srivastava began to attack him. Dispatchers then heard gunfire and Doherty’s last words: “He shot me,” the prosecutor has said.
Paramedics rushed Doherty to UMass Medical Center, where he later died. He had been shot five times.
Doherty was to be married to his fiancée, Sarah Schofield, a month after his death.
Srivastava has an alleged history of violence. A man accused him in 2022 of attacking him at random with a machete in a Westborough movie theater parking lot, but those charges were dismissed earlier this year for failure to prosecute, court records show.
He was also accused of attacking a family member in 2018 and committing a home invasion in 2020 while wielding a hammer, according to court documents.
