Halle Berry has some choice words for California Gov. Gavin Newsom, claiming he devalues women's health and should not become the next United States president.
During a presentation at The New York Times' DealBook Summit on Thursday, Dec. 4, the Oscar-winning actress called out the Democrat for vetoing Assembly Bill 432, also known as the Menopause Care Equity Act, in October. He vetoed a similar bill last year.
"Back in my great state of California, my very own governor, Gavin Newsom, has vetoed our menopause bill, not one, but two years in a row," Berry said ahead of the politician's presentation at the same event in New York City.
The "Catwoman" star, 59, previously campaigned for the bill's passage to make it easier for women to access medical treatments addressing the effects of menopause. On Oct. 13, Newsom, 58, said he vetoed the bill, calling the method of insurance plans covering menopause-related treatments with few limits "too far-reaching," according to Politico.

"But that's okay, because he's not going to be governor forever, and with the way he has overlooked women, half the population, by devaluing us in midlife, he probably should not be our next president either," the actress said. "Just saying."
Berry proceeded to urge every woman and every man to join her in advocating for older women, saying, "This fight needs you. We need you to stay curious. We need you to ask questions. We need you to care. Even when the topic feels unfamiliar and uncomfortable, we need you to have the conversation anyway."
USA TODAY has reached out to the California governor's office for comment.
Gov. Gavin Newsom responds to Halle Berry's comments
In response to Berry's criticism of Newsom, his office responded in a statement to People magazine, saying the governor stands by his decision to veto AB 432. "
The governor has deep admiration for Ms. Berry’s advocacy and looks forward to working with her and other stakeholders on this critical issue," the statement read. "He shares her goal of expanding access to menopause care that too many women struggle to get."
"He vetoed the bill because, as written, it would have unintentionally raised health care costs for millions of working women already stretched thin — something he’s determined to avoid," the statement continued. "We're confident that by working together this year, we can expand access to essential menopause treatment while protecting women from higher bills."
Is Gavin Newsom running for US president?
Newsom has not decided whether to run for president in 2028. In a taped interview with "CBS News Sunday Morning" that aired on Oct. 26, the former mayor of San Francisco said that while he is giving it "serious thought" to running for president, he will wait until the 2026 midterm to make a decision.
"I'd be lying otherwise," he said. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not − I can't do that." Newsom's second term as California's governor will conclude at the end of 2027, and he can not run for a third term.
