Two more suspects have been arrested, bringing the total to 14 people charged with more than 100 offences, in a major fraud investigation dating back to 2016.
Ontario’s former privacy commission said the fraud, involving the theft of personal information including SIN numbers, warrants significant concern.
Ann Cavoukian, now executive director of Global Privacy and Security by Design Centre, said it’s “appalling” that perpetrators stole identity details to help create more than 680 unique synthetic identities — many of which were used to apply for and open hundreds of bank and credit accounts at various financial institutions across Ontario.
