Detroit Mayor-elect Mary Sheffield met with the Secretary of the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development Thursday in Detroit to talk about ways to preserve affordable housing programs and ease homelessness at a time when state officials and others decry many of the policy changes by the federal agency.

HUD Secretary Scott Turner met with Sheffield at Marygrove Conservancy for 45 minutes, and Sheffield said she hopes it is the start of a dialogue with the Trump administration official. The conservancy is where Sheffield's transition team is meeting to help draft her policy priorities when she takes office in January.
