BENTONVILLE -- The city will consider instituting a new fee for developers to get the money it needs to address ongoing sewer capacity issues that are impeding development.

The City Council was briefed at a special meeting Thursday on a proposal from city staff for one-time wastewater development fees.

The city would use the fee proceeds to pay off a $239 million loan offered by the Alice L. Walton Foundation.

Patrick Johndrow, city finance director, said the loan would be available to the city as a line of credit. The city would use the money to design and construct improvements to its wastewater interceptor system -- larger pipes in the city's wastewater collection system that carry wastewater to a treatment plant.
