Police in Mchinji have recovered an Avtomat Kalashnikov 47 (AK-47) rifle that was buried in a cultivating field in Kambatata Village under Traditional Authority Dambe.
Mchinji Police spokesperson Limbani Mpinganjira said the firearm was discovered on Tuesday by two children who were making ridges in the field when they found the weapon wrapped in black plastic and hidden in the soil.
The children alerted their uncle, 38-year-old Gift Stanly, who immediately reported the matter to police.
Detectives rushed to the scene and recovered the rifle, which had a magazine loaded with two rounds of ammunition.
Police have since launched an investigation to trace the owner of the firearm and establish its intended use.
