A woman has been arrested after a pensioner died after being hit by a car in County Durham.

Durham Police were called to the crash on Second Street, Watling Bungalows in Leadgate just after 7.15am on Friday.

An 83-year-old woman was hit by a car and suffered significant injuries. Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman in her 40s has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

A Durham Police spokesperson said: "We’re sorry to report that an elderly woman has sadly died following a road traffic collision in Leadgate this morning.

"Emergency services were called to reports of the collision between the pedestrian and a car in Second Street, Watling Bungalows, just after 7.15am.
