A thresher shark became stranded in shallow water off Mayo Beach in Wellfleet on Tuesday, according to the New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance .
The alliance received calls on Tuesday about a live shark stranded on the beach.
Our team jumped into action and rushed to the site to try and rescue this shark," the nonprofit wrote on Facebook . “Unfortunately the animal died just before the team arrived. A necropsy was conducted on the carcass which was a 14-foot male shark.”
The nonprofit wrote that it’s not unusual for thresher sharks to end up stranded in New England during the fall, as they are trying to travel south to be in warm waters.
“Like many marine animals, this shark took a wrong turn and ended up in Wellfleet’s inner harbor,” the nonprofit wrote.
