Police have cordoned off a road in North Shields on Friday morning.
Northumbria Police officers were first called to Howdon Road at around 8am to reports of criminal damage and have remained on the scene after a man reportedly barricaded himself inside a property.
While police are on the scene, the road has been closed to traffic with officers blocking the street. Officers wearing specialist riot protective gear could also be seen on the street.
Residents have been asked not to gather or speculate while specialist officers work to bring the incident "to a safe conclusion".
The road remains closed from Coach Lane to Dock Road.
