A man has been found not guilty of causing the death of a father from Rushmere St Andrew who was out cycling with friends.

Thomas Gibbs, 42, was cleared of death by careless driving by a jury following a trial at Ipswich Crown Court.

The 42-year-old stood trial following the death of Ben Jacobs on May 17, 2023.

Mr Jacobs, 47, was one of four cyclists riding along Church Road and was involved in a crash.

Mr Gibbs was driving to his home when he encountered the cyclists.

One of the party was struck to the side of his head, while Mr Jacobs was hit “at full impact” and thrown into the air.

He died from his injuries at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

In a statement given to police, Mr Gibbs said that he believed he was travelling between 20 and 30 miles per hour.
