Of all the churlish insults that President Donald Trump has hurled at his perceived adversaries, none has been more reckless than his accusation that six members of Congress with national security backgrounds were “seditious” because they rightfully pointed out that service members can refuse illegal orders ( “Democrats’ video ‘ill-advised’ but not sedition, expert says; also not punishable by death,” Nov. 24).

Webster’s dictionary defines “sedition” as action or speech that advocates or involves the use of force against legal authority. Which conduct comes closer to this definition: Correctly pointing out that service members can refuse illegal orders or President Trump’s own words fomenting the U.S. Capitol insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021, that sought to overturn the results of the 2020
