The City of Hamilton is a step closer to joining a growing movement demanding governments, media and the police use the term femicide to refer to gender-based murder.
“By labeling that these things are femicide, we acknowledge they are not isolated incidents, but part of a broader pattern,” Thea Symonds, coordinator of the Woman Abuse Working Group (WAWG) told City Council’s emergency and community services committee on Thursday. “These acts are not just personal tragedies.”
The WAWG defines femicide as “the misogynist killing of women, girls and gender-diverse individuals because of their gender, overwhelmingly committed by men.”
The committee voted 6-0 to support the proposal, which will have to be approved by Council on Wednesday, Dec. 10, to be final.
