Award season is in full swing. Next up is the Critics Choice Award nominations, ahead of a January 4 ceremony hosted by returnee Chelsea Handler. The CCAs award the films and TV shows that over 600 critics liked the very best. It’s the place where a beloved critical darling like last year’s Nickel Boys might gain enough steam to make it into the Best Picture race, despite not scoring nominations at the Hollywood-focused DGAs or Actor Awards (née SAG Awards), as happened last year.
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners scored a massive 17 nominations, while Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another was close behind with 14. Both were nominated for Best Picture alongside the next-most beloved movies: craft-award favorite Frankenstein , heart-wrenching drama Hamnet , and Wicked:
