The Duchess of Edinburgh arrived at Westminster Abbey this afternoon in her signature understated winter elegance to attend the Princess of Wales’s annual Christmas carol service. Her appearance marked her third major engagement this week, following the whirlwind state visit in which the German President and First Lady were officially welcomed by the King and Queen on Wednesday.

The Abbey had been transformed for the occasion, with a dramatic woodland-inspired entrance, glowing wreaths and Christmas trees woven throughout the ancient interior . Sophie joined guests as they made their way into the candlelit nave, where final preparations for the televised service were underway.
