The Department of Homeland Security responded Friday to widely shared footage showing federal immigration agents confronting an American citizen in a neighborhood in New Orleans' West Bank.

In a statement posted on the social media website X , the agency said that the agents had been "conducting a targeted immigration enforcement operation against a criminal illegal alien previously charged with felony theft and convicted of illegal possession of stolen property."

The woman who border patrol agents were seen chasing, a 23-year-old mother who lives in Marrero, matched the description of the wanted subject, the agency said. They added that the agents had identified themselves.
