The Macomb County Sheriff's Office identified a man shot and killed by Sterling Heights police who said the man pointed a handgun at them during a welfare check earlier this week.

The man was Nicolas Quaranta, 54, of Sterling Heights, the sheriff's office reported in a news release Dec. 5.

County investigators provided no other details in the release, but said they will give an update once the ongoing investigation ends. Sterling Heights police said officers responded to the 44000 block of Apple Blossom Drive for a welfare check of a possibly suicidal man about 3:30 p.m. Dec. 3. The location is south of Hall Road and east of Dequindre Road.
