The season is over for Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray, and his team in the desert might be coming to an end as well.
Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon announced today to the press that Murray will not return this season due to a lingering foot injury that hasn't come along as they had hoped.
In his seventh season, Murray started five games and went 2-3 in those contests. He threw for under 1,000 yards and six touchdowns while also throwing three interceptions. The Cardinals will miss the postseason for the fourth season in a row, their most recent playoff game being a blowout loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the 2021 wildcard round.
For Murray and the Cardinals, it's a similar story that has plagued him throughout his career in Arizona. While he has shown he can take over as a franchise quarterback, injuries and inconsistent play have left the Cardinals side-eyeing their future options at quarterback.
Since taking over the starting role, Jacoby Brissett has put up similar numbers expected from Murray's usual output at the position. He has 13 touchdowns to four interceptions, while also breaking the record for most completions in a single NFL game during their Week 11 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Brisett completed 47 passes for 452 yards.
Murray still has two years left on his contract before a potential exit with the Cardinals. If they outright released Murray before June, they would have a $57 million dead cap hit for the 2026 season. If they could find a trade, however, for the No. 1 overall pick, that would save them $35 million in cap space while only carrying $17 million in dead cap.
A trade market could quickly emerge if Murray is put on the block, as a slew of teams are searching for a franchise quarterback with an upcoming NFL Draft that is sparse on blue-chip talent under center. Teams such as the Las Vegas Raiders, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, and the Cleveland Browns could be options if Murray is available once the offseason begins.
