MANOTICK – The tattered scrapbook, sitting in a private home south of Ottawa after being purchased at a British auction for just shy of five figure Canadian money earlier this year, was first discovered during a house cleanout in Derby, England.

It came from the home of Maude Alice Lineham (1883-1965) and her sister, neither of whom married after losing the men they loved in the trenches of World War One.

In 1911, Lineham is listed as a teacher. When war broke out, she joined the Red Cross nursing unit and served throughout the entire four year conflict taking care of wounded soldiers at hospitals in Derby and Leicester.

Lineham was known as a great pianist, playing for the soldiers who were hospitalized. But she also, as a means of therapy, passed around a scrapbook
