Death Valley, one of the driest and hottest places on Earth, is making headlines for an unexpected reason: water. After a record-breaking November rainfall, a shallow lake has reappeared in Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America at 282 feet below sea level.

The National Park Service reported that November brought 1.76 inches of rain, surpassing the previous record set in 1923. Combined with heavy September and October storms, the park logged 2.41 inches of rain for the fall season, more than its annual average.
