CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) -- According to the Illinois Municipal League, a little more than half of the state's municipalities have established their own grocery tax.

One of those communities is Carbondale.

Carbondale City Manager Stan Reno says the city carefully considered the decision.

He says ultimately city leaders chose to maintain the tax because it allows the city to continue funding essential city services which keep Carbondale growing and thriving.

“Decisions about tax policy are never taken lightly, and the City spent a great deal of time evaluating whether to allow the 1% grocery tax to expire. Ultimately, we chose to maintain the tax because it allows us to continue funding essential city services that keep Carbondale growing and thriving.
