DES MOINES, Iowa (Gray Media Iowa Capitol Bureau) - Iowa legislators are looking into new ways to connect schools with locally produced food after the Trump administration cut millions in federal funding.
The Iowa Farmers Union held its annual convention on Friday to discuss solutions as lawmakers prepare for the 2026 legislative session.
Democratic State Senator Mike Zimmer said the state lacks funding to replace the federal cuts to Iowa’s farm-to-table programs.
“From a finance standpoint, there’s not going to be adding anything to anything we’re going to be clawing to hang on to what minimally we have right now,” Zimmer said. “So to me it was, if we could just fund Choose Iowa at where its at now, I would call that success.”
