ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - As temperatures fall Friday night, VDOT is warning drivers that roads may quickly turn slick, including areas that were plowed or treated earlier in the day.

Crews say pavement temperatures are expected to drop sharply, creating ideal conditions for black ice as moisture on the ground freezes.

“We have the potential for icy road conditions into the weekend,” said Jason Bond, spokesperson for VDOT. “Anything that’s wet is going to freeze overnight into Saturday morning… Drivers really should use extra caution if they do have to be out and about.”

Black ice forms when a thin layer of moisture freezes on the pavement. Because the ice is nearly invisible, drivers may not realize they’re on a slick surface until they’ve already lost traction.
