WASHINGTON — Tiny vehicles popular in Japan could be made in the United States, President Donald Trump announced Friday. Trump first suggested the idea of domestically manufacturing so-called kei cars on Wednesday when he announced a rollback of U.S. fuel efficiency standards.

“I have just approved TINY CARS to be built in America,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, without offering specifics. “Manufacturers have long wanted to do this just like they are so successfully built in other countries.”

Kei cars are the smallest category of legal vehicle in Japan — smaller than street-legal new cars that currently exist in the United States. They typically measure about 11 feet long, 5 feet wide and 6-1/2 feet tall, according to Japan’s Interac Network.
