Friday’s FIFA World Cup draw gave Vancouver fans something to cheer about, politicians cause for celebration and skeptics an opportunity to voice concerns.

The draw, which places different countries’ teams into pools for next year’s international men’s soccer tournament, was broadcast live Friday morning to a crowd of hundreds at a City of Vancouver-hosted event at the Craft Beer Market in Olympic Village.

B.C. Premier David Eby took to the stage and welcomed the crowd, commenting that Vancouver hosting seven games “gives us a chance to sell British Columbia, to grow the economy, create good-paying jobs and support hard-working people right across the province.”
