SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) -If you see them driving the streets of Springfield, they’re hard to ignore.

Cars and trucks that really light up the roads with Christmas spirit. While it may be harmless holiday fun, it’s important to think twice before you break out the masking tape.

Springfield Police say if you plan to drive around with Christmas lights on, it’s definitely illegal.

“Missouri law is pretty specific on the number of lights that you have, the colors that they have to be, and the height requirements on the vehicle,” said Lt. Steve Schwind with Springfield PD.

Keep this in mind: you can only light up your car if you’re part of a parade, or if the car sits on private property.

Other decorations, like car wraps or magnetic decorations, are all a safer bet.
