GAINESVILLE, Ga. — After overcoming suspensions and a legal battle with the Georgia High School Association, Gainesville is now moving on to the next round of the Class 5A state playoffs. The Red Elephants beat Langston Hughes Panthers 40-32 Friday night.
This quarterfinal matchup had been postponed amid a legal battle with the GHSA that followed suspensions to many Red Elephants players over a fight in the previous round's game against Brunswick.
The GHSA initially suspended 39 Gainesville players over the Brunswick fight, which they argued was instigated by Brunswick (and which local officials Glynn County have acknowledged responsibility for). They later reinstated only four of the 39.
