MARSHALL, Texas — An East Texas high school senior has received a full ride to one of the most prestigious universities in the country.
Jose Orlando Maldonado, a senior at Marshall High School, was not only accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) but was also one of 2,550 finalists nationwide to receive the QuestBridge National College Match scholarship, Marshall ISD announced.
The acceptance rate for MIT applicants is just 4.6 percent. Maldonado plans to major in electrical engineering at MIT, as he has always been interested in electronics, the announcement said.
“MIT was my number-one choice because their teaching style is hands-on," he said. “I learn best through a hands-on approach because it allows me to see my mistakes and learn from them.”
