Drivers are facing significant travel disruption this morning as the A19 in Tyne and Wear remains closed in both directions following a serious collision. The incident occurred around 11pm on Friday night, between the A1058 Silverlink Roundabout near Tynemouth and the A1056 Killingworth Way in Killingworth.

Emergency services, including Northumbria Police, are currently on the scene. National Highways has confirmed that traffic officers are assisting with traffic management in the area. A statement from National Highways indicated, "The A19 in Tyne and Wear is closed in both directions between the A1058 Silverlink Roundabout near Tynemouth and the A191 at Holystone due to a serious collision which occurred just after 11pm last night (05.12.25)."

Due to the severity of the incident, the road is expected to remain closed into the morning to facilitate collision investigation works.

For drivers heading south on the A19, a diversion route has been established. They are advised to follow the hollow diamond diversion symbol. The route involves exiting the A19 at Holystone Roundabout, turning left to join the A191 southbound, and continuing until reaching the roundabout with Norham Road. From there, drivers should turn right onto the A1058 westbound to re-join the A19 at Silverlink Roundabout.

Northbound traffic is also being diverted due to the closure. Drivers are instructed to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol. This route requires exiting the A19 at Silverlink Roundabout, taking the fourth exit onto the A1058, and then turning left onto Norham Road northbound. At the next two roundabouts, drivers should take the second exit to remain on the A191 until reaching Holystone Roundabout, where they can turn right to re-join the A19 northbound.

Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and expect delays as emergency services continue their work at the scene.
