This weekend, two perennial powers will face off to see who will be the champion of what's often regarded as the best, deepest conference in college football.

No. 3 Georgia will look to continue its eight-game win streak when it takes on No. 10 Alabama (No. 9 CFP) in the SEC championship game on Saturday, Dec. 6 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The matchup has significant College Football Playoff implications. With a win, the Bulldogs, already safely in the 12-team field, will assure themselves of a first-round bye. The Crimson Tide, meanwhile, could remove any doubt around their playoff candidacy with a win, while a loss would drop them to 10-3 and likely lead to a few nervous moments during Sunday's playoff selection show. No team made the inaugural 12-team playoff last year with more than two losses, though it's unclear whether coach Kalen DeBoer's squad would be effectively punished for making a conference title game.

The game is a rematch of Georgia's only loss this season, a 24-21 home setback against the Crimson Tide on Sept. 27. Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.

Either Georgia or Alabama has won the SEC championship in nine of the past 10 seasons. The Crimson Tide have dominated the recent series between the two, winning 10 of the past 11 matchups dating to 2008.

Prediction, Craig Meyer, USA TODAY Network: Georgia 27, Alabama 24

Both the Bulldogs and Crimson Tide are different teams than they were during their meeting more than two full months ago. While Alabama's still quite formidable, Georgia appears to be hitting its stride at the right time, though its offense will have to do better than it did last week against a weak Georgia Tech defense.
