The board of directors of the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen will join municipalities across British Columbia in opposing a controversial private member’s bill that would change how local governments review development permits.

Bill M216, the Professional Reliance Act, would require local governments to accept any submission certified by a registered professional, rather than conducting their own technical reviews.

In a statement, Engineers & Geoscientists BC said it has been in discussions with the province about the bill and is concerned about its potential effects on public safety, professional practice, and the additional oversight burdens it would place on government offices and local authorities.
