On Monday, Dec. 8, the Duluth City Council will consider an ordinance dealing with two areas of great importance in our community: the former Lester Park Golf Course and significant portions of Duluth’s recreational lands and popular trail systems.

The fate of the golf course has been much in the public eye since the City Council voted to change course on a 2021 decision to preserve it as parkland and to instead transfer the property to the Duluth Economic Development Authority for development, pending a land-use plan.

The second issue is one that most of us have been unaware of: a collaborative, decades-long project to protect many of the places we have been accustomed to using for skiing, hiking, and biking that were not historically owned by the city but were instead county-controlled
