“This should terrify us.” Jane Fonda doesn’t usually pull punches, but her latest warning about Netflix’s takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery lands with a force even longtime fans of the politically active celebrity didn’t expect.
Fonda wrote her warning right before Netflix won the $82.7 billion bid earlier this week, but the concern she outlines doesn’t hinge on the final buyer. “Regardless of which company ends up acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery or its parts,” she wrote for The Ankler, “the resulting impact is clear: consolidation at this scale would be catastrophic.” For her, the consequences aren’t abstract. They look like “fewer jobs, fewer opportunities to sell work, fewer creative risks, fewer news sources and far less diversity in the stories Americans get to hear.”
