Seniors across New York could save hundreds of dollars on their property taxes thanks to recently signed legislation.

On Saturday, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that she had signed a bill that will allow localities to provide a real property tax exemption of up to 65% for senior citizens.

Previously, localities could only offer seniors an exemption of up to 50%, which had not been raised in decades.

“No New York senior should lose their home because they can no longer afford their property taxes,” Hochul said. “By signing this legislation, we are working to make New York more affordable for our seniors on fixed incomes and empowering them to age in place, at home, in the communities they know and love.”
