A driver was found dead after a vehicle veered off Route 283 and deep into the woods in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County, on Saturday, Dec. 6, according to the Londonderry Fire Company.

Crews were first dispatched at 4:54 p.m. for a crash on the Route 283 eastbound on-ramp from Vine Street, where a vehicle had gone off the road, but the driver was already out of the car, the department said. One patient was taken to a hospital, and Engine 54 and Utility 54 were placed available.

But less than an hour later at 5:31 p.m., Dauphin County dispatchers sent firefighters back to Route 283 for another crash—this time with unknown injuries near mile marker 4.4, officials said.

Dispatchers reported that a vehicle had traveled 20 to 30 yards into the woods, and the driver was unresponsive, with the doors blocked by trees. Lower Swatara Township’s Rescue 59, already nearby on Route 441, was added to the call.

Rescue crews used a chainsaw to cut a path to the vehicle while Engine 54 and Utility 54 assisted, the fire company said. EMS soon advised of a “Signal 12,” meaning the driver had died at the scene.

Firefighters set up lighting and diverted traffic for the Pennsylvania State Police as they investigated. Rescue 59 was later cleared to respond to another crash at Union Street and Route 283, while Company 54 stayed on scene for three and a half hours, authorities said.

The fire company offered condolences to the victim’s family and friends.
