GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Grand Rapids police shot and killed a man who fired at officers Saturday, Dec. 6, on the city’s Northwest Side, police said.

No officers were injured.

Deputy Chief Joe Trigg said that three officers fired at the man who shot at police after a high-risk traffic stop.

Police were called earlier in the day to a report of a domestic assault on Strobel near Fourth Street. A woman left the home to make the report. She told police that a gun was involved.

Police went to the house and tried to contact the man but he refused to come to the door, Trigg said.

“At that time, the officers’ hands are pretty much tied. There was nothing else for them to follow up on at that point,” Trigg said.

Several hours later, the woman told police that the suspect had sent her text messages
