CYPRESS — The Los Alamitos thoroughbred meet began with the first 15 races being won by 15 different trainers Friday and Saturday, including upsets by low-percentage barns.
Then the surprises ended emphatically with Bob Baffert winning the Starlet Stakes.
When Consequent and jockey Kazushi Kimura passed dueling leaders in the last 100 yards to win by a length, Baffert had his ninth consecutive victory in the $200,000, Grade II race for 2-year-old fillies.
That extended what is believed to be a North American record winning streak for a trainer in one stakes event. Baffert’s other long streaks are seven in a row in the Del Mar Futurity for 2-year-olds in 1996-2002 and his current seven in a row in Santa Anita’s Robert B. Lewis Stakes for 3-year-olds.
“Another good horse,” said Mike Marl
