WASHINGTON — Five hundred additional National Guard members have arrived in the District of Columbia in recent days following a deadly shooting that killed one West Virginia guard member and critically injured another near the White House on Nov. 26.
The surge was requested by President Donald Trump, and the total deployment now includes more than 2,700 National Guard troops citywide, according to the D.C. Joint Task Force. The group includes 886 D.C. Guard members and 1,864 troops from other states — the largest non-inauguration deployment in the district this year.
Residents and visitors are seeing an increased uniformed presence across the city, prompting mixed reactions.
