Alexandre Pantoja came into UFC 323 chasing his fifth flyweight title defense against Joshua Van in the co-main event. The card marked the second-to-last PPV of the ESPN era before the UFC shifted to Paramount+ for the next seven years. Despite Pantoja starting aggressively, throwing leg kicks and engaging in early exchanges with Van, he ended on the losing side because of the devastating injury.
Then disaster struck almost immediately. Pantoja threw a head kick, lost his balance, and fell to the mat. When he tried to post on his arm to break the fall, something went horribly wrong. The arm either dislocated or broke on impact. The fight ended right there via injury TKO. Pantoja couldn’t continue with the arm damage, handing Van the victory and the flyweight championship by default.
