The ambush of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., last week is a tragedy on multiple fronts. The shooting killed Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and left Andrew Wolfe, 24, critically wounded, plunging their families in sorrow when they should have been celebrating Thanksgiving.
The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is an Afghan asylee, someone this country once called an ally for his service in a CIA-backed counterterrorism group.
Now he is charged with killing an American and wounding another, and our nation is left to wonder what could have led Lakanwal to shoot innocent people. We worry we might not get straight answers from the Trump White House, which seems eager to use this attack as an excuse to crack down on immigrants further, even those with no links to Afghanistan.
