NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's stay in India is a personal decision influenced by the circumstances that led her to flee to New Delhi. Hasina, who left Bangladesh in August 2024 amid violent protests that resulted in numerous casualties, was recently sentenced to death in absentia by a tribunal in Dhaka for alleged crimes against humanity related to her government's crackdown on dissent.
During the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit, Jaishankar addressed questions about Hasina's future in India. He noted, "She came here in a certain circumstance, and that circumstance is clearly a factor in what happens to her. But that is something she must decide." He emphasized that India supports a democratic process in Bangladesh and expressed hope for improved bilateral relations.
Jaishankar remarked, "As a democratic country, we would like to see the will of the people ascertained through a democratic process." He expressed confidence that the outcomes of such a process would reflect a balanced view of India-Bangladesh relations.
Regarding Bangladesh's current political situation, Jaishankar highlighted the importance of fair elections, stating, "If the issue was the election, the first order of business would be to do a fair election." He reiterated India's commitment to supporting democracy in its neighbouring country.
In addition to discussing Hasina's situation, Jaishankar addressed broader security concerns, particularly regarding Pakistan's role in terrorism. He pointed out that many of India's security challenges stem from the Pakistani Army's policies. He cautioned against becoming overly fixated on Pakistan, stating, "We should not get over-obsessed and hyphenate ourselves with them."
Jaishankar also touched on India's strategic autonomy in foreign relations, asserting that India maintains relationships with multiple countries and will not be dictated by others. He stated, "For any country to expect to have a veto or a say in how we develop our relations with others is not a reasonable proposition."
As negotiations continue for a trade deal with the United States, Jaishankar emphasized that India's approach is driven by national interests, particularly concerning the livelihoods of its citizens. He concluded by reaffirming India's commitment to maintaining good relations with key global players while prioritizing its own strategic interests.
